Deputy Support & Expectations

      Expectations of the deputies have increased over the years due to the leadership of a number of outstanding representatives including Ladd Dawson (Delaware), Ron Bill (Broome), Roger Ward (Seneca), Charlie Baker (Suffolk), Pete Capria (Rockland) and Jim Godshall, Charlie Campanella and Bob Claire (Monroe).  They and many others have raised the level of excellence in the services that we provide for the children.

      The normal Camp Iroquois work week of a Deputy includes:

• Teaching classes every morning from 9:00am to 11:00am.  Classes include Basketball, Football, Soccer, Volleyball, Hiking, Cheerleading, Biking, Arts & Crafts, Archery, Swimming, Sailing, Canoeing, Snorkeling, Kayaking, Fishing and Water Skiing.
• Presenting or supervising the Sheriffs’ Demonstrations from 11:00am to 12:00noon.
• Providing supervision for Recreation and Waterfront activities from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Recreation activities include Biking, Archery, Arts & Crafts and Field Games;  Waterfront activities include Swimming, Sailing, Canoeing, Snorkeling, Kayaking, and Fishing. 
• Special activities include the 6-Mile “Hike”, the Beach Carnival, Pride Day, Slip-n-Slide, Class Demonstrations, the Regatta and others.
• Deputies help on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30pm to 9:30pm with Project Adventure, land Games, “Camp Store” and various other activities.
• Deputies are expected to wear their uniforms for the Awards Ceremony on Saturday morning. This will show the campers that the normal people they have befriended throughout the week are indeed officers of the law, and are as approachable in uniform as in plain clothes.

      In addition to these expectations, there are an unlimited number of opportunities for Deputies get involved with the program and with the campers.  We have three campfires during the week, and most Deputies choose to perform their own song for the Friday Night Campfire.  Thursday evening is often a highlight for campers, counselors and Deputies alike, as all can enjoy or supervise Capture the Flag and the Dance.  Many Deputies choose to work alongside the staff during a daily Work Hour, serving both immediate and long-term needs of the facility.  Deputies have joined the staff and campers at morning swim, meals, Friday picnics and every other activity that we have enjoyed. Our most committed Deputies contribute innumerable hours during the off-season, securing donations that have greatly improved the facility and equipment.
